My homage to the Dirty Pair Movie (also called "Project Eden", "Pink Typhoon", and "Over The Top") was originally released in 1987 by Haruka Takachiho & Studio Nue/Sunrise, Inc./NTV, and then again in 1994. Character design by Dokite Tsukasa based on illustrations by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko from Takachiho Haruka's book "The Great Adventures of Dirty Pair" [ISBN4-15-030121-2]
Unlike much modern Anime, this movie has award-winning novels to back up its plot and characters, and it stands as perhaps one of the best Anime movies ever written. Of course, we are talking about 80's anime, so the dialogue certainly isn't going to give Shakespeare any worries - but the huge number of intertwined plots and the fabulous foreshadowing and near orgasmic pay-backs that happen throughout the movie certainly are not the kind of thing most cloth-eared idiots are going to expect from "a cartoon".
Funny and frantic, the movie starts in true Dirty Pair style as a Bond-like spy parody with Kei and Yuri defeating a rare metals smuggling operation and, in the process, inadvertantly destroying an entire Dysan ring and .. most likely .. the majority of the life on it.
And all of this is just backstory that happens before the opening credits have even run.
From there on the movie is 90 minutes of fantasic, sexy, funny, frenzied romp as Kei and Yuri attempt to stop mobs of inexplicably mutating monsters that are threatening the galaxy's dwindling supply of a rare mineral which is crucial to space flight.
Along the way they run into what has to be The Best Mad Scientist that has ever appeared in any movie, complete with his own kick-ass theme music. Wattsman Kyoju's theme music is pretty representative of the most excellent background music throughout the movie, and the opening theme "Safari Eyes" and its accompanying animation definitely re-enforces the "James Bond" parody while staying firmly entrenched in the motifs already well established by the Dirty Pair's TV series.
With two separate world governments blaming each other and on the edge of war, a secretive but sultry "Professional Thief" out for his own good ends, and the mad professor Wattsman sucking DNA out of every organism he can get his hands on, the Dirty Pair manage to alienate both governments, lose their clothes, and destroy nearly all of the clues and the majority of the planet in very short order.
But, in keeping in the finest tradition of The Lovely Angels, it's not their fault.

This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007, from a conversation between ~Lareth and =FrozenStarRo, who with the help of their friends *Iardacil and =Sylwiaa , wanted to make something to promote known and unknown photomanipulators alike here on DeviantArt. As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same. As of recent, the talented =Behana has joined us in bringing you this weekly newsletter and we are excited to have her on board. This is a special feature, with a selection of 50 manips from the past year that we loved.
